Bugs Bunny

Introduction

In the summer of 1996, I found myself in the most extraordinary of situations, one that transcended my usual animated world. Through a series of wacky events, I ended up meeting and playing alongside none other than the legendary Michael Jordan in the movie "Space Jam." It was a slam dunk adventure filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a dash of Looney Tunes chaos.

This article recounts my time with the basketball icon, as well as some unforgettable moments with Bill Murray's character and Daffy Duck.

camaraderie, and a dash of Looney Tunes chaos.

Our “pedagogical” practice can be viewed as symbolic of the flow of a river, never constant, absorbing and reflecting the facets of "time" and "space", in the realm of NATURE.

Workspace

Our studio space in Mumbai, set in the heart of the heritage commercial district, Ballard Estate, is an open ground for experimentation and creative thinking. With a backdrop of history and culture, the studio setup fosters research-driven innovation. The organisational structure encourages the spirit of enquiry and collaboration, resulting in consistent learning, a fluid and vibrant exchange of ideas and concepts, debate and discussion around design theory, alongside broader socio-cultural and environmental issues free of hierarchical constraints.

The culture and the design process are shaped by imaginative minds stemming from varied backgrounds, each holding extensive expertise and a diverse array of skills.

Ecology & Spirit

Ecology implies a seamless, cohesive and integrated approach to design.

This is achieved through the assembly of a group of highly motivated and evolved specialists in diverse fields drawn from across the world. It is about creating lasting relationships that become so deeply intertwined that the whole ceases to be a sum of disparate parts and instead becomes a living, breathing organism in itself.

Spirit implies balance 'Building art is always the spatial execution of spiritual decisions.''

Architecture and site should have an experiential connection, a metaphysical link and if we consider the order (the Idea) to be the outer perception and phenomena (the Experience) to be the inner perception, then in a physical construction, the outer perception and inner perception are intertwined.

Architecture and site should have an experiential connection, a metaphysical link and if we consider the order (the Idea) to be the outer perception and phenomena (the Experience) to be the inner perception, then in a physical construction, the outer perception and inner perception are intertwined.

Conscious Design

We encourage the development of an 'Intuitive' approach to design, more subjective in nature prior to addressing the objective or external aspect of it. "Architecture is not about structures: it is about ‘Life’. And to understand Life you have to develop a deep relationship with ‘Nature’ (which we are an intrinsic part of). Only then does Nature open its doors to you: to the awareness and understanding of ‘Consciousness’ that pervades all existence. The planet is poised precariously and unless there is a sea change, a radical transformation not merely in the collective but the change must manifest in each one of us, in our very subjectivity, there is little hope." -Kamal Malik

Material Affinity

Nature provides an endless source of inspiration. Emphasis on the use of local materials and supporting the artisans who expertly and lovingly breathe them to life forms a cornerstone of this practice. As a corollary in this attempt we have tried to resurrect the Indian craft as well cultivate the use of local materials. This is exemplified by the diversity and relevance of our works that incorporate load-bearing brick masonry, stone masonry, exposed concrete, structural wood and of course structural steel.

Collaborations

It truly does take a ‘village’ to identify, develop and execute meaningful work that is both sustainable and transformational. Global and local connections to share knowledge and experience form the critical sinews of this studio as we continue to problem solve, innovate, communicate, evolve, and perfect our craft. We are actively dedicated to engage with seasoned individuals, foster inclusive processes, and amplify the voices of overlooked communities and narratives. This commitment extends beyond the architectural profession to encompass the broader built environment. Since its inception, the firm has consistently curated diverse teams including designers, engineers, consultants and craftsmen, placing a strong emphasis on incorporating varied perspectives to enrich and shape the design journey.

Sustainability

Creativity without concern for the earth is an exercise in futility. We are committed to keep local artisans and techniques alive and leveraging the benefits of local climatic factors and natural resources to ensure harmony between the natural and built environment. Malik Architecture has long identified the use of natural and vernacular materials as the pathway to environmental sustainability.
